Page 1 Introduction

Allen Charles Photography was established at Dryden Chambers, Oxford Street London as early as 1963 by Roger Allen after leaving Kent to live in London. Roger S. C. Allen was concerned that his other great love, that of playing guitar, would get in the way, so the name Allen Charles was born.

In 1964 the Master Photographers Association of Great Britain awarded him the designation and professional qualification of Associate of the Master Photographers Association  for his work in Portraiture.

In those far off days, monochrome photography was of course the main medium, colour being a bit hit and miss. The development of colour was not greeted with a great deal of euphoria by many photographers, mainly due to the power that laboratories and manufacturers were able to exert over the individuality of photographers. In short Roger Allen or, as he was known, Allen Charles, moved on and continued for a number of years in industrial, audio-visual, sound and motion picture work.

Old habits and loves die hard, and after 20 years music won. It was most satisfying and although not as well paid, Roger Allen felt happier and traveled widely, discarding the pressures of commercial life and developing technologies to do one of the things he loved best.

It is strange sometimes how life goes full circle. By 2003 monochrome had regained its rightful place in the world of photography, and digital technology has put the power back in the hands of craft photographers the world over, especially where colour is concerned. Digital cameras have now reached a level of development that excites and fulfils the craftsman/artist beyond all expectation.

This web site launches Allen Charles Photography. Drop by occasionally and see what's new. Roger Allen welcomes commissions.

To those of you who remember Roger (Allen Charles) taking some of these pictures: Thank you! You are grown up and may have children of your own now, the famous and the infamous, in countries all around the world.

Finally, my thanks to Rosalyn Fay Benson who's input is greatly valued.
